Why Plugs and Not Seed
| Firstly there is no doubt that seed is a lot cheaper than plugs. We sell seed as well as plugs, but we are contacted regularly by people that have failed to grow a lawn from seed (sometimes after many attempts), but they still blame the seed for their failure. And herein is the problem in a nut shell. UNLESS YOU ARE A SKILLED GARDENER AND HAVE 7 DAYS A WEEK TO GET YOUR LAWN ESTABLISHED - DON'T BUY SEED ! |
What are the reasons that Plugs are cheaper than seed?
1) Prelimary stake in the ground. I have a gardener he will know about seed. Really !!!!!. Ask your gardener what were the last plants (in the Mediterranean) he grew from seed. This question will place 99% of gardeners into the "No experience" category.
2) Unless you take the necessary precautions (see Lawn Pests), seeds are a very attractive food source for Ants, Snails and Birds. Most people don't bother. But by the time you have these pests eating or removing your seed the cost of seed quickly exceeds the cost of plugs.
3) Whatever people say, it basically comes down to cost. People will choose the cheast option even though they do not have the skills to support this decision, and ultimately failure is the result.
Reasons why plugs are more successfull than seed:
1) PlantingOnce planted, the already rooted plugs do not die. They only need watering once per day.
2) Watering
You will have to ensure the seed does not dry out untill it germinates. This means watering seral times a day. It could take up to 30 days for some grass types to germinate. As opposed to plugs which only need watering once a day.
3) Planting / Sowing
Some seeds can only be sown at certain times of the year. Grass plugs can be planted all year round.
4) Seed from the Garden Center.
Produces results in super fast time. But the fastest seeds to germinate will be the first seeds to die in the heat of the summer.
